Post #1 in a couple: so we just did a New Year's Day open house, and for the first time let ARR have his own guest list. I was a little nervous - we had several kids and their parents RSVP, and I was hoping they'd all play well together and that the parents would do ok with our (admittedly kinda weird) friends circle. It went better than we had any reason to expect. The kids spent the vast majority of the party playing happily with only minimal adult supervision, let alone intervention. (Big hit: my parents got ARR walkie talkies. At one point, we had five kids barricaded up in ARR's room with one in the basement declaring himself to be king of the couch, walkie-talkie-ing back and forth with great delight.) The adults also all seemed to have a good time. I got to spend most of the party hanging out with people. Major success. (Also, the gingerbread trifle, which included mascarpone, Asti, brandy, and ginger-tea syrup and for which I've been hanging onto the recipe for over a year was a delicious as I'd hoped.)
