2015 Book Review #69: Because You're Mine

Title: Because You're Mine
Author: Lisa Kleypas

Synopsis: Girl doesn't want to marry the lecher her parents picked out; girl runs away to the theater to get herself despoiled on purpose; girl falls in love with rake; predictability ensues.

Thoughts: I was totally on board for the first half of the book. Madeline is spirited and smart; she wins over Logan partially just by being hyper competent.

But then they break each others' hearts and she gets pregnant, and he becomes a jackass. And she becomes a complete nincompoop who just accepts him being a jerk for way, way too long. Mostly because the plot requires them both to be stupid and act against their own self-interest. Feh.

No spoilers, but I'm finding a similar problem with Outlander. It was one everyone seemed keen on, and I am not getting it.

I enthusiastically recommend Mistborn, by Brandon Sanderson. One of my students recommended it. It is the best book I read all year. It is the first of a trilogy, and the entire trilogy is strong, although the first is the best. Each book has an amazing twist. The conclusion left me in awe - bravo, Sanderson, I did not see that coming. I am especially impressed at how Mistborn has the most believably written romance I've come across, and it is not the focus of this fantasy story. The characters win each other over by being interesting, competent, and respectful of each other - AND STAY THAT WAY.

Doh! I either missed that, or remembered someone else reading it (probably Mith).

Dragondrums didn't do anything for me either - Mennolly was shunted out of the spotlight for ... who the hell is this dude, and why should I care?
