Title: Zoe's Tale
Author: John Scalzi
Genre: space opera (book 4 of 3)
Thingummies: 3
Synopsis: A retelling of The Last Colony, from the teenage daughter's point of view.
Thingummies: I read this mostly out of a completist urge--I've read most of Scalzi's other work, but I had also been satisfied with the ending of The Last Colony and hadn't felt a need for a rehash.
I don't think my opinion has changed much after reading. It's well done--it's very difficult to write a second novel covering events of a first and have it still stand as an interesting book. It may have helped that I could only dimly remember the events of The Last Colony, so some of it still came as a mild surprise. Really, though, there were only a couple of scenes that were necessary--Zoe's meetings with the werewolves, with General Gau, and with the Consu. The rest is kind of filler. Well written filler, but still pretty filler-y.
So--really only for the completist.
