Ditz

Managed to make it all the way to the station today before I realized I'd left my purse next to the bed. Since that has my PATH ticket, my subway pass, and all my money, I had to turn around and walk all the way back home.

Oh, that sucks. At least it didn't also have your keys.

Then I probably would have ended up calling Chuckro and walking to his office. And being, like, an hour late to work.

Oh, that sucks. Sorry that happened to you.

It would be worse if you'd told yourself not to forget those things explicitly right before closing the door on yourself. I mean, yes, you need your purse clearly, but it's in the realm of "I need it it every day, so I expect it to be there" which means it can easily be forgotten once or twice because you don't actively think about it. Whereas something more rare to bring with you--a Netflix DVD to mail, a check to cash, a present for a friend--you tend to tell yourself "Don't forget [fill in the blank]! Don't forget!" until you either a) don't forget it or b) forget to bring it along even after reminding yourself constantly.

I've had several mornings of hiking (or RUNNING) back to the apartment for stuff like that. Or, even stupider, closing the door, locking it, then having to unlock it and go back. Lather, rinse, repeat that cycle--I've unlocked my door three times in a morning because I kept forgetting one thing or another.

In short: you're less ditzy than me. I don't think that says much, but that's the comfort I have to offer :)

Oh, no, I've done that too. Ran back for band hats (needed to catch a specific train). Forgotten library books, rented movies, mail, bills. Left the heat on, the lights on, the dishwasher unrun. Left my lunch on the counter. Repeatedly had to unlock and relock the door several times as I remember that I don't have cell phone, umbrella, whatever.

For example, today I meant to bring a slip of paper with my doctor's phone number on it. Despite having walked all the way back to the apartment once, I still do not actually have this paper with me.

At least it was a beautiful spring morning, and not a sleety hailing one. Consider it exercise.

Done that, too. Went back for the one thing and forgot the four besides it. Don't worry: still less ditzy :)
