Worst stage hand ever.

So I just put one of our cast members, who, incidentally, is also the writer, in the hospital.

It was an accident, a complete accident, that was probably both of our faults. I was carrying a piano bench and Marshall was coming around a corner putting on his sweatshirt. It was covering his head so he couldn't see me. And although I said something to try to stop him, it was way too late - there just wasn't enough time. So he proceeded to walk into the leg of the piano bench. Which caught him in the larynx.

He ended up on the floor, although he didn't pass out, thank God. We called an ambulance and ended up with two or three public safety officers and two EMTs and another two or three kids our age in uniforms. They took him to the hospital. He was capable of speaking, although it hurt, and wasn't in shock or having huge problems breathing, so they think he's going to be ok.

I feel pretty awful. I mean, it wasn't really my fault, and pretty much everyone else there agreed. But c'mon - we're two days from opening, and I just put a cast member in the hospital with a larynx injury. He would have been better off with a broken leg. It would be funny if it wasn't so awful. People seemed pretty sure he was going to be ok, so hopefully all will come out all right and we'll all laugh about this in a few years. But right now, I feel rather terrible.

Poor Marshall.

awww... that's kind of funny, but it's obviously not your fault. and i'm sure it'll be ok. i'm so excited to come see the show!

If Marshall's ok in the morning, it'll be pretty funny. If he's not...then I'm going to feel really awful.

I really, really hope he's ok.

At least he was smiling when he left...and just know that I'm positive nobody blames you. That was a total, one-in-a-gazillion freak accident. Perhaps god doesn't like the show? Still. I know that probably doesn't make you feel better, but do feel better. I always figured that if someone was going to do that, it would unquestionably be me...

I'm sure everything will be fine, and you'll look back on it and laugh, and Marshall will be perfectly good to perform, and before the show you can tell him "Break a larynx!" Oh, er, don't read that last bit until you know he's okay.

So are you cured of the theater bug yet? I hope Marshall makes it back in time for the performances.

All I could think was, "Wow. Good hit." (I know that's awful, but it's really impressive to lay someone out with a small part of a piece of furniture.) I still can't quite imagine the appropriate configuration of piano bench and body parts...all I can figure is that you were carrying the bench upside-down...

You should train to be a ninja. A furniture ninja.

Good luck with everything. :)

I was carrying the piano bench on its end, so the flat bench part was against me and the legs were sticking out in front of me. It's a pretty tight space, and I thought it would be the only way I'd make it around the corner without getting wedged. Of course, this put the ends of the legs at throat height for Marshall, who's a bit shorter than me...

If I'm not allowed to be a shirt ninja (or even a black pants samurai), I'm not sure if I'm willing to let Rebecca become a furniture ninja.

Though on the upside, whenever she damaged someone with any of my furniture, I could blame Ikea. #$^$ing Ikea.

Why can't you be a shirt ninja?

The configuration makes sense...still an impressively (un)lucky hit.

Because apparently I'd look silly.
