It's become a running joke amongst alumni that if you do not bring a child to your 15th Reunion, you will be issued one. I'm beginning to think there may be something similar going on in my neighborhood. You'd think that the neighborhood is currently composed 100% of joggers, dog owners, and parents of very small children. Perhaps the runners are all running because they are afraid that if they stay still long enough, someone will hand them a dog or a child.

As someone who has lived in the neighborhood in question for 12 years now, the uptick in little kids in just the last year or two has been remarkable.

Someone looked into it recently--we actually are at the leading edge of a boomerang boom. Combo of the Boomers having grandkids and the fact that a lot of people delayed during the financial crisis. At this point, either everyone's back on their feet or have realized that things aren't actually going to get better, so if they want kids, now's the time. Birth rate's been way up in the area for the last year or two, and they're expecting it to be the beginning of a wave.

... or the runners are running to get away from the screaming child at home in their apartment...

I think I'm noticing the other parents a lot more now that I am one.
