So as Chuckro alluded to, we had another sonogram yesterday for the early anatomy check. Aside from finding out that Smidgen is a boy, we more importantly determined that there's a long list of birth defects we don't have to worry about. He's as healthy as can be determined at this stage--80% sure he doesn't have Down's, he's got all four limbs and ten fingers in the right orientations and proportions, he's got both brain hemispheres and all four heart chambers, his umbilical cord attaches correctly on both sides, his nose and lips are the correct configuration (no cleft lip), spine's right, major arteries are right, heartbeat continues to be in the right zone.

And how amazing is that? Not only that he's (so far) merrily developing on schedule all by himself, but that we can see this. We can see his urethra and his nose and his thumbs. Little dude's 5 oz and hidden under skin and fat and tissue, and we could have counted his vertebrae if we wanted to. We can see the chambers of his heart and watch them work. I know we've been able to do this for awhile now, but it's just astonishing.

He's super-squirmy, too. Chuckro thinks he takes after his parents and was showing off. I can't feel him yet, but his placenta's on the bottom, which apparently means I'll probably start feeling him in the next couple weeks. The book says he's probably already starting to get hiccups around now, as his diaphragm practices breathing. I remember one of my coworkers feel her baby get hiccups. I don't think it's happened yet (although I keep almost convincing myself that it is, and then realizing it's in my head).

Life is weird, folks.

Hooray, Smidgen shall be the Prince of the Cosmos! And I am glad to hear he's healthy and so are you.

I'm waiting for the sonogram where you catch him doing jazz hands.

Well, he was doing the "hand in front of the face against the paparazzi" thing for a bit.

Yay!! So miraculous and awesome! It's amazing how you can see these kinds of details of a baby's development.

Hooray, Smidgen shall be the Prince of the Cosmos!

This makes me picture [livejournal.com profile] jethrien dressed as The Queen of All the Cosmos from Katamari Damacy.

I am also glad that all is going well!

Actually, that's precisely the point. Kid doesn't have a name yet, but we've already planned the cosplay. After all, when you're a toddler, it's not hard to get a ball bigger than you are to roll around a con...

I'm picturing matching felt hats for the entire family.

(And I figure toddlerhood is the last we'll be able to dress him up without him having his own opinions as to which character he wants to be.)

But will you sing him the theme from Katamari as a lullaby? *grin*
