Ice ice baby

Thanks to a brilliant idea which I cannot take credit for, a bunch of us went ice skating in Bryant Park yesterday. (That would be the park behind the library.) I haven't been ice skating since I was a little kid. I was a little worried because of this - but made a discovery. The same skills that allow you to turn while on skis allow you to turn while on ice skates. Woot! I could even go backwards (veeeeery slowly and poorly) and turn in little circles. Michelle Kwan I'm not, but there was no falling down.

Very crowded rink. I suspect it would have been a lot more fun with fewer people, but ah well. There was an Uma Thurman sighting.

We ended up going for barbeque and Texas-sized margaritas afterwards and then playing drunken air-guitar video games and movie trivia games afterwards. Air guitar I'm remarkably good at. Movie trivia, I'm not.

I am extremely jealous.

Was this with [livejournal.com profile] xannoside? Sounds like fun. Sorry I missed it. i decided to be a useless lump of human flesh yesterday. It happens every now and then.

Yep. He and his lovely lady are the brilliant architects of this plan.

Every so often one needs to be a useless lump of human flesh. It keeps you sane.

Ooooh. I've not been ice skating in years either. On the other hand, unlike you, I learned to ski from my skating skills. They are surprisingly similar talents. Almost makes me want to try short skis one of these days...

I suspect that ice skating is a lot more pleasant if the skates, like ski boots, are more carefully fitted to your feet and are comfortable. I was fine skiing for several hours, but after half an hour in the ice skates, my feet wanted to go home and cry.

(Though I did have a good time, and was fine as soon as I got back into my sneakers.)

Oh, mine too. The arch in my left boot was in entirely the wrong place. There was pain and a little bit of whining.

That is very true. Rental skates are one of the reasons I haven't been skating in years... I outgrew my last decent pair sometime during middle school. Also crowded rinks. You do get totally spoiled by a few years of open ice and shoes that fit...

Agreed, although some of that is forced by the nature of skating. The human body was generally not designed to put all of its weight on an effective area of the foot a few square inches in area, particularly when that effective area is on the middle of the foot rather than the heel...
