Fake ring

So I bought an incredibly cheap ring at Claire's (actually five rings for $8.50 because they came as a set) to wear in place of my engagement and wedding rings while backpacking. (There's no way I'm taking a sapphire into the backcountry, but I still don't want to get hit on in the airport.) I'm actually wearing it today, because I'm going away for the weekend on a trip that involves a lot of pools and lakes and waterslides and other places it would be easy to lose a nice ring.

I've been wearing my class ring for almost seven years, my engagement ring for six, and my wedding ring for nearly five. I'm currently wearing just one very smooth, very light ring and it feels weird. Kind of naked.

Has it turned your finger green yet?

Nope. I've been wearing it for several hours now and I've washed my hands several times, so I don't think it's going to.

If you have rings that turn your skin green, coat the band with clear nailpolish. :)

I don't usually, but then I usually only wear those three specific rings (which are all gold, so don't cause problems). If this one gives me trouble, though, I'll give it a try!

One of my favorite stores for this type of stuff is Accessorize. LOVE their stuff :-P

In this particular case, I wasn't so much looking for "cute" as just trying to find a ring that fit and didn't have a two-inch flower stuck to it. :)

What? You mean you didn't want something that could get caught in all sorts of things????

I really should have gotten the one in pink fake gold that had holes for three fingers and consisted of a rhinestone-encrusted snake that stretched completely across the back of your hand.

Sweet. I say go all out and just get the brass knuckles - with flowers on them. :-D

A wedding ring for polyandrists...

If it was also $8, you should have--it'd be an excellent cosplay accessory one day.

That's a clever idea!

So, does a ring like that really help? I kind of felt that the sort of people that are hitting in others regardless of apparent response in places like airports are not to be deterred by rings anyway.

My guess is that the fact Shnayder is with her while backpacking will be the more effective deterrent, but hey, it couldn't hurt.

It doesn't usually stop people, but when you turn a nice oblivious guy down, they're slightly less crestfallen.

Also, it just feels weird not to wear a ring at this point.

Heh. Twelve years ago, as fallout from a grand adventure, I ended up with a wedding ring. And after the adventure, I used it for the social hack complementary to yours: "I'm wearing a wedding ring, so if I'm making conversation, clearly it's just me being friendly." I was sick of my interest in talking to people being mistaken for hitting-on, if those people happened to be female (or, in at least one case, gay male). Wearing the ring tended to work, but it got complicated.

This is more noble than a (single) guy I met at a wedding. He wanted to start wearing a wedding ring so that women would think he was taken and, thus, more attractive. He saw it as his gateway into a world of short-lived flings.

Classic mistaking of correlation ("guys who are taken seem more attractive to women") for causation. Guys who are more attractive to women...are more likely to be taken. Also, are more likely to be calm and confident and not trying sketchy pickups.

(Can you tell I've given the topic a lot of thought and research for the How to Pick Up Chicks panel?)

If that had worked -- which, as [livejournal.com profile] chuckro points out, is not all that certain -- then they would have deserved each other. :-S
