I <3 my appliances

Oh wow. Oh guys. I love my new microwave and vacuum cleaner so much. My microwave heats up my hot chocolate in only 2/3 the time it took the old one. And it's actually hot, really hot. And the vacuum cleaner? Has different height settings. Like, I can use it on both the hardwood floor and the carpet and they both come out clean. I don't think the little Persian carpet has ever been so clean.

I cannot say how happy this makes me. I feel like the pathetically thrilled housewife in a bad 1950s commercial. Rest in peace, crappy old appliances. I don't miss you.

I do like the fact that such simple things can make you happy.

Simple things like a couple hundred dollars worth of appliances we had to carry home in the snow?

I try to appreciate things, at least as much as not having them bothers me. I've had quite a lot of annoyance at the old vacuum cleaner's inability to clean carpets or wood particularly well or the old microwave's taking five minutes to heat milk enough. So I figure I need at least that much gratitude and happiness now that I have appliances that do do those things. Otherwise, you spend your whole life being annoyed at what goes wrong, while ignoring everything that goes right.

You are a 1950s housewife. Yes, microwaves existed then.

Hey, I didn't wear pearls while vacuuming. That helps, right?

[identity profile] ivy03.livejournal.com 2011-01-12 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends. Were you wearing petticoats?

[identity profile] jethrien.livejournal.com 2011-01-12 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally. Over my khakis and under my dumpy house sweater.

[identity profile] mithras03.livejournal.com 2011-01-12 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh - what kind of vacuum cleaner?

[identity profile] jethrien.livejournal.com 2011-01-12 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't actually remember. A relatively cheap one. It's just that its predecessor and I never got on, and then it got old.

Heeeee. I was too, too thrilled about the electric sweeper I got for my birthday, so I understand completely.

It's not part of regressing to housewife status: it's part of being old. You start wanting things that work better and you have the money to get them, so you do and your life is aweeeesome.

Seriously, I go to Disney World and there are shirts! The Nightmare Before Christmas is everywhere! Cute hats! Pins! Jewelry! Commemorative Mugs! Me? I head for the kitchenware section and buy Mickey Mouse-head pancake shapers, ice cube trays, and oven mitts.

[identity profile] chuckro.livejournal.com 2011-01-13 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
...they make Mickey Mouse ice cube trays?

[identity profile] trinityvixen.livejournal.com 2011-01-13 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course they do. This is DISNEY. They haven't met a product they couldn't turn into a House of Mouse-branded product. This is the organization that is almost single-handedly fighting for more copyright protection in film (to the detriment of older films left to molder) because they fear the loss of Mickey that much.

You would not believe how delighted I was to move into an apartment with a dishwasher after two years in a place without one. And the washer/dryer combo ... oh, it's a slice of heaven.

[identity profile] jethrien.livejournal.com 2011-01-13 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'd believe it, as Chuckro's previous apartment didn't have a dishwasher. And we still don't have our own washer/dryer. Is it sad that one of my life goals has become to have a washer/dryer combo in my own apartment?

[identity profile] cubby-t-bear.livejournal.com 2011-01-13 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a life end-goal, but a milestone, surely. And it's not a bad thing to aspire to. We should only stop trying to make our lives better when we're no longer conscious :)
