Improv roleplaying

My friends appear to be an improv comedy troupe.

Wonderful rpg last night, featuring a number of really good one-liners. It was the kind of atmosphere where people start playing off each other, bringing in recurring jokes and adlibbing elaborate explanations. My poor character, unfortunately for her, appears to be the permanent straight man of the group. She'll have shock white hair and a drinking problem by the end of this chronicle, I think...

Ha! Now you know how I felt playing Sir Robbley! Of course, in that case it was more "certifiably insane" than "humorously eccentric" on the part of the other characters...

Actually, no, I don't.

Because while I'm playing straight man to wacky characters, Maia (my character) was designed to be that way. Specifically, she's a desk jockey federal agent who was assigned to babysit a team that had been plagued with failures. She's supposed to be the sane one among crazies, and that's what I knew going into it.

That, and, well...this roleplaying group is less dysfunctional than the last one was. People are playing wacky characters, but not ones that are annoyingly wacky. When they do something crazy, it's funny, not irritating. Usually because their psychosis is all in-character, and doesn't destroy the plot.

In short - I'm not frustrated. At all. I'm having a great time. Maia is frustrated and rapidly approaching a nervous breakdown. But she was designed that way.

Pissed off character, happy roleplayer. As it should be.

You're going to love this group.

Of course, Maia is pyrophobic, so she's got her own issues.

Wait.. _jethrien_ is playing a pyroPHOBIC character?!?! Something's wrong with this picture. Though I suppose being pyrophobic doesn't necessarily prevent her from setting everything in sight on fire :)

Maia has not set any fires at all. She's spent some time cringing from incendiary bullets, though. (Not shot by her.)
