Weekend notes

- Lovely trip to Boston. *waves to Bostonians*
- Some fantastic desserts that make me want to bake more - mint brownies, Boston cream cake, mojito cupcakes. (Gaming group, expect some of these in the near future.)
- Nothing like going on a trip to make you grateful to be home.
- Apparently the torch in the Olympic ceremonies malfunctioned - just long enough for me to run out of tape.
- Finished "Re: Your Brains" arrangement for Chuckro's a cappella group.
- Also did a lot of hand-sewing while watching three hours of Project Runway reruns. It was supposed to be Olympics, but NBC was choosing to cover such fascinating stories as a walking tour of Vancouver, some random skiier's small hometown upstate, gossip about a Kardashian, and polar bears instead of, y'know, sports. I kept flipping back to Project Runway until they got back to actual competitions, and pretty much ended up seeing a couple downhill runs and one pairs figure skating. But the Project Runway was entertaining and made me able to pretend I was sewing a fabulous costume or something instead of repairing long underwear (which is what I was actually doing).

Boston cream cake!

Probably not for a little while. There's going to be an apple cake, a mojito cake, and possible chocolate lava cakes before I get there.

Apple cake? This recipe is win:

I used Penzey's baking spice instead of cinnamon, and loved it.

Oh, I've got a recipe from my grandmother via my mom (probably came over from Germany) that's fantastic. And one of my favorites. Judging from everyone's eagerness for a second slice, I think it's a pretty good one. :)

Oh, envy envy. Our family recipes all got lost in a move when I was twelve... before I'd even tried half of them.

Oh, that's just tragic.

It would take a lot to wipe out the family recipes at this point - we're not big on secrecy, so there's a lot of copies. My grandmother still has all of hers, of course. She typed them up for my mom and her sister when they left for college. When I was about to leave for college, my mom typed them up for me and my brother. And a lot of the good ones, I've shared around. Chuckro's mom has sent us a bunch of hers, too, so we've got a binder.

It wouldn't be your own family recipes, of course, but do you want some of mine?

Perhaps at some point, but that's the sort of thing I'd rather do in person so I can browse and grab the stuff I'm most interested in. If I get a recipe file in bulk, chances are I'll forget I have them.

What I'm trying to do is gather a list of recipes that (a) I've tried making, and (b) were really really good. Like that apple cake I posted. And someday many many years from now those WILL BE the family recipes, hehehe. "Hey, mom, do you have that rumcake recipe my grandmother used to make?"

This is also why I want to start collecting recipes into self-published annual cookbooks. If I can get myself that organized.

*waves to Jethrien* It was lovely to see you guys!

Did you get the mojito cupcakes at the cupcake place in Davis Square? I still haven't been there and think my life is worse off because of it.

Kickass Cupcakes? Yup.

They also had a cinnamon-chai sticky toffee cupcake and a champagne cupcake, but we were too sugared out to try them.

I feel like that's the biggest problem of the "food tour"--by the end of it, you're pretty sick of the food in question. Kinda like the "butterover" problem.
