Signs I've been in the museum world too long

This morning, I noticed a funny smell in our bedroom. When I walked in this evening, my first thought was, "Yup, the new desk chair is outgassing."

Three years ago, I would have just said it stunk.

Outgassing comes up in museums...why?

Enormous problem in conservation - if you make airtight cases, it helps protect artifacts from humidity, but if anything inside has a significant amount of outgassing, the gas is stuck in there and does its own damage. We bake our building materials to test if they're going to be a problem.

Among certain crowds, "outgassing" is a euphemism for farting. :)
