Snow and birthdays
Feb. 6th, 2021 05:45 pmSo we got something like 18 inches of snow, with more expected tomorrow. Last year we got basically no snow, so I guess we're making up.
It's weird, in that it barely affects us at this point? We need to shovel to be decent neighbors, of course, but it's not like there's any question of commuting. In theory, ARR being on distance learning would be an impact, but one of his classmates tested positive for COVID so the whole class has been quarantined for the last 10 days anyway. The school did decide at the beginning of the year to give the kids three snow days (that is, no school for the first day of a major snowstorm, with us going on distance learning after that if it's still too messy to safely open). I've got mixed feelings on that - magic of childhood blah blah, but also it's not like we're able to not work those days.
For ARR's birthday, we had his party on Minecraft. We did our best to make it not just a regular Minecraft playdate (which he has most weekends). Got tons of Minecraft balloons as a backdrop. Put together goody bags for the kids. I made Minecraft cookies, we dropped them off at people's houses ahead of time. (I figured royal icing would survive better than cupcakes or something.) Also made a ridiculous Minecraft cake including cake dirt, rice krispy treat sand, and blue Jello water. And trees from rice krispies and pretzel rods. We tried. He was happy, at least. I think it's the first birthday party where no one at all cried, so there's that. (There are advantages to older kids. There was some yelling, but no actual crying.)
