I really struggle with Fourth of July these days. I'm not particularly proud to be an American at the moment. ARR and I are wearing red shirts (white shorts for me, blue for him). But I didn't put the flags out. Instead, I just dumped a bunch of money into the ACLU's hands and the Fight Fair bail fund. I miss belting out patriotic songs, and I resent that I feel like the assholes have somehow made flying a flag feel like a declaration of intolerance.

So yeah.

#31. The Opposite of Drowning by Erin McRae and Racheline Maltese. 5. I'd actually hoped this romance between a grumpy editor and a neurotic marketing consultant would be slightly more supernatural inflected than it was (which the cover copy kind of implied), but it's absolutely charming anyway. (Disclosure: Maltese is an acquaintance.)

#32. Save Me the Plums: My Gourmet Memoir by Ruth Reichl. 3.5. Memoir by the last editor of Gourmet. Well written and witty, if not enormously consequential. Wow, her life went from being kinda like my life to not being at all like my life.
