Ski trip (on the late side)
Feb. 14th, 2019 06:39 pmOver the weekend, we went up to Hunter Mountain for snow tubing and skiing. Glad we did, since we seem to not getting much in the way of real snow this year. (Thank you, wintry mix storm on Tuesday that cancelled school without giving us sledding.) At least this way, ARR got to do some winter sports.
Last year it was crazy warm - like, I wore a t-shirt and only wore the coat for the pockets, 60-something-degrees. This year, bitter cold. We had a lucky break - I'd reserved snow tubing for Sat and skiing for Sunday, and Saturday had such intense winds that they closed most of the lifts. But we successfully bundled enough so everyone was comfy. And it was 28 degrees on Sunday, which is absolutely perfect for skiing.
It sounds like ARR did ok in his lesson, but I can report no real progress at the top of the mountain. He totally freaked out, and ended up skiing with me holding him between my legs again. Ah well. I did get some really nice runs in before lunch - conditions were some of the best I've skiied in years. And Hunter just opened a new lift, which was mercifully uncrowded. Last year, I'd thought I'd lost a lot of my skill; I was getting down tough blues ok, but not feeling super confident. This year, the blacks were a joy - not a problem with me, the conditions were just that icy last year.
The hotel we stayed at has certain advantages - there's a pool, and a game room, and it's very child-friendly. On the other hand, we've been there twice and had plumbing issues both times. (Last year the shower didn't work; this year, the toilet ran all night.) It's pretty run down. Dunno. Would go to Hunter Mountain again next year, may chose a different hotel.
The slightly embarrassing part - last year, we forgot ARR's snow pants and had to buy him some at the ski shop down the road. This year...we forgot ARR's snow pants. And had to buy him another set at the exact same place.
