- Last Saturday, I took ARR to AMNH for the second time. The first time, he had a fine time in the Discovery Room but was more just politely interested by the rest. I think he liked the steps in Gems & Minerals more than the exhibit. He was too young. This time...oh man. I understand why people become teachers. He was absolutely enthralled by everything and bursting with questions. The best parts we had to do multiple times, so he could absorb them better. Two full spins around the entire fourth floor (fossils) with a total of four stops to marvel at the Titanosaur. Three trips through the Big Bang theater. He LOVES the idea of walking through time. Chuckro and Mithrigil got a whole recitation about the Big Bang when we got home. But we also spent a solid five minutes watching a random Science Bulletin about the probe that went past Pluto, and watched the video on the growth of human populations twice through. (Which he's also still referencing, in completely different but correct contexts, a week later. It was the first time he'd heard of the World Wars, and he brought it up again yesterday.)

- We also learned some origami from the Origami USA volunteer, and they've created a monster. We have a kit at home with a ton of paper and a book full of very bad directions. And he's very eager but also impatient, which has resulted in a lot of Mommy muttering curses under her breath.

- Also, I randomly wandered into my boss and her kids in Plains Indians. Seriously random.

- Chuckro covered most of the highlights of the ski trip in his post. I had a lovely time. Some of the middle slopes were a sloppy mess, but the blues on the edges were lovely. And skiing with an open jacket and a short sleeve shirt was definitely a novelty.

- I'm glad, though, that the weather report was horribly inaccurate, because if we'd known it was going to pour all Monday afternoon and be over 60 on Tuesday, we never would have gone. But you know what? We had an awesome time anyway.

- ARR does get bravery points for sliding backwards down a sheet of ice, falling six inches down onto the ground, and getting trapped by his own skis lying in a mud puddle up to his ears, then (after a well deserved cry - I'd be crying too, that sucked) still wanting to get on the ski lift. Which he handled like a champ.

- He doesn't have his wedge at all yet, though. (Unsurprising.) And was very distressed to be passed by other kids in classes who were successfully turning on their own without falling. We kept pointing out that they were older and probably had skiied before, and also that if you look around the bunny slope, it's a total bloodbath of mittens sprawled over snow. He wasn't convinced. He finally melted down a third of the way down the slope, which is when I came up with the in-between-the-knees thing. Which I hope I don't have to do too many times, because holy shit was that hard on my knees. (An actual wedge wasn't strong enough to hold us both; I was basically skiing very slowly on solely my downhill edge. Turns were HELL.) But he loved it. And that's what really mattered.

- Work is...ugh. People are being very indecisive and it's KILLING me.

- On the maybe hopefully plus side? I'm going to Australia. Well, I was going to go as of January. But then they cancelled the trip. (After I'd bought plane tickets.) Then they uncancelled it, but I wouldn't be the one going. Now I'm going again. I hope?

If anyone's heading to HELIOsphere on March 10 - I'm going to be on a panel at 5:30, "Re-examining Childhood Favorites through Adult Eyes". Otherwise, I'll be in the dealer's room, hawking the not-quite-released yet Bakers Street Irregulars II. Come say hi!
