ARR needed ear tubes round II, plus having his adenoids shaved and the back of his nostrils widened (turbinates trimmed). Apparently when the surgeon cut into his ears, pus came running out, so he'd had yet another undiagnosed ear infection. So this was definitely the right choice. (The ear tubes are designed to fall out. He was basically ear-infection free for nine months. Since they started falling out right before Christmas, he's basically had a low level ear infection almost continuously, with dramatic flare ups.)

He was so, so good pre-surgery. Subdued and a little frightened, I think, but so good. Didn't whine or cry or anything. Just did exactly what the doctors asked him to do.

When he woke up, though, he was inconsolably hysterical. I climbed into the gurney with him, but he couldn't stop crying this horrible cry I'd never heard before. They ended up giving him a dose of morphine, which knocked him out again for an hour, so I just lay there holding him until he woke up again. I think the extra time to come out of the anesthesia haze helped--when he woke up again, he was still clearly in pain, but reasonably calm, willing to eat an ice pop, and moderately excited about stickers. Much more himself.

(Meanwhile, in the bed next to us, we had an equally hysterical four year old. Poor kid was equally upset by the fact he felt terrible and the fact that he couldn't actually stop crying. It's the anesthesia, of course, but there's something pathetically funny about a kid sobbing about how he can't stop crying. Poor, poor kid. He also eventually calmed down enough to eat an ice pop. But before then, at one point, he turned to his parents and sobbed, "Why did we even come here?")

Still, yesterday was really not fun. I had to work all afternoon, and ARR was generally unhappy. He couldn't really articulate what he really wanted (and we couldn't do anything about it anyway), so he spent most of the day insisting that he wanted things (monkey, milk, etc.) that didn't actually make him feel better.

He's doing much better today. His nose is still a bit of a bloody mess, but he's been impressively joyful all day. Maybe just happy to feel better. He wears out easily--we had to take a break at Gymboree and lie down for a few minutes. But we went to an Easter egg hunt in the park. (Brilliant--they left the eggs empty, and had you turn them in for a prize. No allergens, no one had to actually stuff hundreds of eggs, and when they finished, they just tossed them all out again for the kids who got there late and missed the first round.) We also photobombed other kids trying to get their picture taken with the Easter bunny. We danced to the DJ. So he's definitely feeling better.
