Had the day off (yay election day?). Spent most of it cleaning, it feels like. (Trying to map the mouse damage and make the place a little less mouse-friendly.) Things of note today:
- Holy crap, our garbage compactor was disgusting. I've kind of been spraying it with Lysol and covering it with plastic bags, especially since Chuck got food poisoning from handling broken garbage bags that one time. I finally put on crap clothes and elbox length rubber gloves and gave that thing the cleaning it needed. Hot soapy water, sponges, brillo pads, about half a bottle of rubbing alcohol and then a good spray down with more Lysol after everything was clean and dried, and it doesn't quite look like the biohazard it may have been.
- Mice have been behind the toaster oven, but haven't made it to the shelves. (Nothing's nibbled, no mouse droppings.) Turns out we had two more boxes of matzoh ball mix than I thought we did, though. Plus a dinner kit from 2005.
- The oven from upstairs also had difficulties, so we now have a new oven. I'm not sure how I feel about it - there's no window or light, for one thing. Also, it's shorter than the others. I can now reach the window above it, which I suppose is good and makes cleaning easier. Problem is, because I couldn't reach the still well, and no one could see it, I didn't keep it as clean as I could have. Now I can, and have to. You know what's really disgusting and hard to clean? Dust + years worth of grease build-up. I think I actually took paint off the wall. Which was fine, 'cause that paint was never going to be grease-free. There's also a chunk of mirror I never even knew was there. Now, it's a small kitchen, mirrors make it look bigger, I get it. But really, people - the mirror strip behind the sink is hellish enough to keep clean, you put one behind the stove too?
- My mother-in-law's figs all came ripe at once. We have so many figs. There was a fig salad for dinner. Tomorrow, the gaming group is getting roasted pork with figs and red onions, and then fig and goat cheese cake.
- The one thing more delicious than sugar creamed with butter? Sugar creamed with butter and goat cheese.
- I have been super productive today. Except on my word count, which was my main goal, and for which I've only written about 800 words thus far today. I should really get cracking on that, methinks.
