Code Monkey likes concerts
Mar. 28th, 2009 10:47 amJonathan Coulton was awesome last night. The opening band was Paul and Storm (half of DeVinci's Notebook), who were hilarious and also handing out boxes of Thin Mints to encourage audience participation. The running theme of the night seemed to be "screwing up", including Storm forgetting to replace the battery in the guitar and having to borrow Jonathan's, Jonathan repeatedly screwing up a chord in a song he doesn't play much and saying "Shit!" increasingly loudly, and then the ukelele player doing the same. (It was the kind of audience that just laughed and roared adoration louder at each mistake.)
Coulton had a number of special guests that made things extra awesome - Paul and Storm doing backup vocals, the aforementioned ukelele player (who had won a contest to remix "Code Monkey" and happened to live in New York, so Coulton invited her to join), and the Hungry March Band. No clue how they got involved, but dude, anarchist marching band. Especially awesome was a girl with cymbals on ribbons who sort of threw them around while playing - she'd drop one on the floor, and then sort of yank so it came flying back to her hand. She also had a really awesome corset.
The crowd was particularly amusing. Chuckro won geek shirt bingo when he managed to spot Penny Arcade, Order of the Stick, and World Ends with You T-shirts back to back. When Paul and Storm were going to play a "poignant" song (about the death of the creator of Chicken Nuggets), one started off by saying this was the time to get out the lighters. And then corrected himself and said in this crowd, someone probably would just pull out the lighter app. Within about five seconds, a dozen iPhones were being waved back and forth in the air. I swear, it was geekier than some conventions I've been to.
