Last night, we went to the National A Cappella Championshipsin Avery Fisher Hall. There were four high school groups and six college groups, each the champion of a different region, competing. (Against the people in their age bracket, not high school vs. college.)

Upon getting there, we discovered that the Eastern high school champions...were from my hometown. Not actually my high school, the other one, but still my town.

And they totally swept. Best choreo, best arrangement, best soloist, and apparently for the third year in a row, best overall group. I felt a little sorry for the other schools.

It was really familiar. This is kinda what happens when my high school goes to performing arts competitions.

In addition to that little blast of nostalgia, it was overall quite a lot of fun. Six of the songs were in reps of Princeton groups, two of them were ones my high school did while I was there.

Also, the Avery Fisher sound board guys did the best job of mic-ing a cappella that I've seen, which was still kind of a miserable failure, but better than other places. They had a lot of trouble figuring out which soloist had which mic at any given moment, and there were a lot of balance issues. But I can't really blame them - mic-ing an a cappella group with choreo is almost impossible unless everyone has a designated mic and you spend three hours going through each song and preseting the balances perfectly.
