OK, fine, I'll do this. Why not? I'm nearly surrounded by books, so "closest" was hard to determine; I finally settled on the closest book that I own (my borrowed shelf is directly above my head):
BOOKWORM:
1. Grab the nearest book
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
6. Tag 5 people
"She tries to count the cats but becomes confused, for the animals keep shifting positions, eel-like, ill-tempered, nudging one another out of the way, baring teeth, hissing, and growling deep in their throats, swatting with their claws. Ceci is accustomed to house cats, friendly pets who brush against a little girl's legs and look up expecting to be petted and fussed over, but thtese cats ignore their human benefactors, shrink away and hiss with bared teeth even if Mrs. Vandeventer, their special friend gets too near. Most are scrawny specimens, shorthairs, with mangy fur, looking as if they've been wild all their lives; one or two are high-bred cats - there's even a rail-thin Siamese...How cruel people are, Kristine thinks with a shudder."
-from The Female of the Species by Joyce Carol Oates
Wow, didn't realize how long-winded Oates was until now. So, umm, don't do this with Finnegan's Wake, 'kay?
