Oven

So we have a new (that is, brought down from the apartment being renovated upstairs) oven. The light doesn't work, but everything else does. The funny thing is that the unit must have been the same age as ours - same model, apartments had been renovated around the same time last time - but is in significantly better shape. I swear to God, I did my best to keep ours clean, but the new one is startlingly white. Clearly, the folks upstairs weren't using it on a daily basis for five years like we've been doing...

This is New York. People who cook on a regular basis are freakishly unusual. No offense :)

Yeah, I know. You put your oven through a regular workout, though, I think.

Again, freakishly unusual. To take an extremely simple recipe, I'd bet a few bucks that fewer than half of New York households have baked any form of cookies from scratch.

Which is a great pity for them.

Woo hoo! I may not cook on anything like a regular basis, but I have made cookies! I'm part of that elite smaller-than-half!

Let me take a wild guess as to why that is... Um... You use your oven. A lot. I am reminded of the people I lived with when I was interning. They owned one pot and, as far as I can tell, had never used it. Their philosophy seemed to be why cook when there are restaurants?
