Three things that are excellent:
1)birthdays
2)Riesling
3)friends who come over and celebrate your birthday by drinking a ton of Riesling
We did a wine-tasting party for my birthday, focusing on Riesling. Which was delicious. Started with a sparkling Riesling, then worked our way through trocken, halbtrocken, kabinett, spatlese, and auslese. (That is, dry to very, very sweet.) I think I liked the kabinett and spatlese best for drinking on their own, but the halbtrocken made a fantastic accompaniment to a plateful of Indian food. It was a little boring on its own, but with the spicy food, it just came alive. (I've read that Champagne is supposed to do well with spicy; however, trying the sparkling Riesling with the Indian is the very first time I've had a bad pairing. I've had wines that were fantastic with foods and wines that didn't bring anything to the food, but this is the first time I've eaten something, and then tasted a wine that I'd liked on its own and hated it. It went really, really badly. That was the only bottle we didn't finish. Everyone liked it the first time around, but after drinking the others and eating Indian and cake, no one was able to go back to it.)
